Inmaculate Conception
Description
This figure of Mary, mother of Jesus, rests on an octagonal base (attached to a dowel pin). At her feet are three angels’ heads, an inverted moon, and cumulus clouds. The figure is vertical and front-facing, with the right leg slightly bent, creating a subtle contrapposto.
She wears a cape that loosely drapes all around her, and the imperial crown. Her head is tilted slightly to the left, showing the features of a young woman with long wavy hair falling across her shoulders and back. While she gazes downward, her hands are clasped over to the left, in a prayer position.
This is an extremely dynamic piece, thanks to the position of the hands and the head, while the folds of the cape and tunic lend significant volume.
