Reliquary of Saint Gregory
Description
Bust of Saint Gregory, portrayed as a mature man dressed in pontiff’s vestments, including a cope, tiara, and globes. The most striking feature of this image comes from the rich treatment of the vestments, particularly the cope, which is polychromed with beautiful flowers and adorned with images of saints set into decorated panels. At the centre of his chest is a reliquary which would have originally housed a relic of the saint. The reliquary is framed in gold in the shape of a targe, in the Mannerist style, adorned with geometrical “C”s.
Considering the predominant features of its style (frontality, lack of expression, the drape of the clothing) and the type of moulding used, it can be considered representative of Sevillian mannerism , from the late 16th C.–early 17th C.
