The Virgin of Los Remedios
Description
The Virgin of Los Remedios is a Marian avocation proclaimed by the Order of the Holy Trinity (Los Trinitarios), founded by Saint John of Matha and Saint Felix of Valois. Several cities took this avocation as their patron, and many churches and temples are consecrated in her name.
This is a sculpture in-the-round in carved, gilded wood, measuring 1.93 m tall. The virgin’s robes feature a gilded estofado decoration.
She is facing forward, holding the Christ Child in her left arm. In her right, she holds a sceptre. She stands on a cloud adorned with the heads of three cherubs. The Baby Jesus, who is depicted naked, also holds a small sceptre in his left hand.
