Universities
The University of Huelva was established on 1 July 1993, when it was formally separated from the University of Seville, following many years of calls for its independence. In 1987, the La Rábida secondary school in Huelva had paved the way for a groundswell of local support that culminated in a general strike and rally on 3 March 1988, demanding that the province be granted its own higher education institution. As a result, in July of that same year, the old Hospital de La Merced was offered up as the site of what was to become the university. Also in 1988, the Board of Trustees was constituted, with the blessing of the various institutions of Huelva, including the Provincial Government and the City Council, which formally submitted their requests to the Andalusian Parliament to establish a university in the city. On 12 December, this was approved, aiming for completion in 1992. Over the next two years, three formal agreements were signed, signalling the creation of its first three faculties.
