Artworks
Head of Doña María Alonso Coronel
Description
For this work from the Gipsoteca collection, the mould was based on the sculpture of María Alonso Coronel (wife of Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, "Guzmán the Good") in an attitude of prayer, created by Martínez Montañés. Both this and the artist’s sculpture of Guzmán the Good are located at the San Isidoro del Campo Monastery in Santiponce.
These two works are the only non-sacred figures Motañes created in his lifetime, apart from the bust of the equestrian statue of Philip IV in the Plaza de Oriente, Madrid.
