Mariano del Amo y Mora
Description
This portrait of the first Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy is an outstanding work by a young Navas Parejo (Álora, Málaga, 1883–Granada, 1953). With a painstaking and detailed technique, in which we can appreciate the use of certain painterly touches such as plays on light, the artist overcomes the challenges of creating a portrait in the absence of the subject. It is likely he copied a photograph, given the smoothness of the modelling.
The lines carved out of the marble base and the design of the cartouche are both reminiscent of 19th C. styles.
The work was presented at the Granada Fine Arts Exhibition in 1910 and was awarded a special diploma.
The University of Granada holds two replicas of this bust of Mariano del Amo. The first, from 1906, can be found at the Botanic Gardens, Faculty of Law; and the second, a copy from 1910, is located in the main lobby of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
