Mario

Description

In this piece, entitled Mario, Eugenio Rivas (Córdoba, 1982) represents the head of a male, bearing a serene expression with closed eyes and a relaxed appearance. The artist plays with the effect caused by the impression of a severed head and the face of a person sleeping. This effect is heightened by the tremendous realism of the piece, achieved through use of a particular technique that blends polyester with different pigments. This technique simulates natural skin tones, which are then nuanced with glazing.

The work belongs to the series entitled Santos (Saints). Here, the artist reflects on divinity by alluding to individuals who are close to him (or by using himself as the subject) and representing them using modern Christian iconography to ‘humanise’ the Divine.

Winner of the 2008 Alonso Cano Prize for Artistic Creation (sculpture category).
